I would like to design a small house with a light bulb or other heating device that is powered off solar energy and has thermostat controlled. Any idea on the type of thermostat to use? Any help finding a resource for such a design?
Of course I’d like to bring the cat in, but she is a ferrel cat and is FIV+. I already have two indoor cats, so infecting them is not an option. Also, she is wild (ferrel) and won’t adapt well to the indoors.

I have a Mandarin Orange tree in the backyard that I know we wont take care of. I was considering removing the tree. It is the only thing in the backyard at this time.
If I have most of the branches cut away and leave the main base and a few well chosen branches to hold up solar lights, wind chimes etc, will the dead/dying tree attract pests of any kind??
Thank you for any information on this. I know it sounds bad to remove the tree, we are just unable to give it the care it needs to not have the mess around and airborne pests about in the area which is near farming.

outdoor Dusk to Dawn solar light ?

Hi, I am going on the second solar light by the back door entry since the first one did not last long. I replaced one and have it installed by a professional this time. It is dusk to Dawn system. I was working well for a while, now the light bulb went out. I replaced it, the light is ON constantly even during bright day light. What is going ON? I am tired of having have to replace the fixture over and over and over…….what is the problem ?

Can something that is solar powered get wet?

I was given a cute little outdoor frog ornament that says welcome and it lights up at night; it is solar powered and I was told that it couldn’t get wet…true? thanks

How can I go green?

I have a 200k sq foot home, and a 5 car garage. I currently am single and have a few pets. I have a hummer, a mercedes, a harley, a limo, and a hybrid for big media events. I like to fly to paris and catch in on the latest fashion, or find the hotest parties all over the world. Because I travel so much, I like to use my own leer jet. Please help me, could I put a energy efficient light bulb in each of my 50 plus rooms in my mansion? Should I try and put up solar panels on every square inch of my roof? I hate it when the end of the world comes and I don’t even have time to see all of my pet’s offsprings, or clone myself to take care of those pets.

I was having a debate with my friend about ways to make the environment better and to have a better energy reliance than oil. One idea that was floated was to have every street lamp based on solar power (with backup electrical grid power in case it rains or something) anyway, here was the debate which we need your answers to: Is it better to have a solar panel on each street light OR Is it better to keep the street lights as they are and just install solar panel hubs around the city that feeds into the electrical grid?

Watch and help? safe solar hack?

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/800000/solar_powered_usb_charger_cheap_and_easy_to_make/

How safe is this to do? Could it fry and ipod or phone? I’m planning on only using one solar panel from a outdoor light, is it safe now?

Yesterday I saw the ISS from the ground for the first time and it looked amazing – I checked the sighting schedule on NASA’s website, went to the roof of my building and observed it clearly. Even though I live in the middle of a huge metropolitan area, the sky was clear and the ISS was the brightest object in the sky, not counting the Moon.

It was so bright and shiny, I could definitely tell it had a structure to it, it looked like a very very bright reflective object with a halo around it and I could tell it was slightly elongated and segmented and I’m pretty sure I could make out the solar panels and see things branching off from the main body.

I have to say, I was very surprised it looked so real, I wasn’t even sure if I’d be able to see it at all and I was stunned with the amount of detail I was able to make out with just a naked eye in an environment of heavy light pollution.

Would anyone care to share if they were able to observe as much detail with the naked eye?

I am working on a project that will supply Solar powered Street Light to a State in which Security Cameras will also be installed at select points on certain poles. I want to know what this will cost with the following requirements for the Street Light: 40 watts LED for the light source and 80-120 watts for the panel with battery and controller all inclusive.

Tax form 5695. You are permitted to get a tax credit for 30% of solar items that "uses solar energy to generate electricity for use in your home".

Does this include solar items that do not attach to your home’s electrical grid? Meaning things like: self contained solar outdoor flood lights, solar driveway lights, solar shed lights, etc? They are still used in my home, and still save energy, just not attached to the home’s main power source.

I’ve got some other stuff that i have to fill out the form for anyway, just wondering if i can also get credit for these as well?
Just saying yes or no without any sort of explanation doesn’t really help matters.

If it is allowed, why?

if not…. why?

Sources are helpful.
Also, where is the line? If I wanted to switch out some of my 120v AC lights to solar, and go with 12V, rewire the house so I don’t convert to AC, as its fairly wasteful, would that then count? There has to be a point at which it would qualify.

even if that point is ‘it must attach to the power grid’.
Alright, thanks. I had already seen the Energy star site, my contention was just what qualified as ‘electricity for the residence’.

It’s hugely vague. Example: Solar panels on roof with battery system, and power inverter. It’s got a 120V AC plug, and you can wire it ‘for the residence’… would that count? Again, I’m asking where the line is. does it have to attach to power grid, is that the final line, or just 120V AC in your house
As one final note

the official IRS tax law states

"uses solar energy to generate electricity for use in a dwelling unit "

for use in a dwelling.

So, to me this means, geez, if i have a solar powered flashlight that i keep in my house for when i need it… for me to use…. inside of my dwelling, or "use in a dwelling".

Same goes for accent lights. So, why do you two still think that its a definite no? Is it the whole inside/outside thing? ‘in a dwelling’ in the general case, would that be null and void as soon as you step outside of your house. Is your property/yard not considered part of your dwelling?

"uses solar energy to generate electricity for use in a dwelling unit "
Seems pretty clear. it doesnt say
And bostonian,
huge difference between ‘to’ and ‘for’

Can I please get an answer by someone who actually knows whats going on?

I just installed solar coach lights for my pathway on Sunday. They are "supposed" to be a "bright white", according to the package. They are glowing mosquito zapper blue. They glowed this color for the last 2 nights. Is it b/c they need more days to charge? They came from Walmart. Please advise!

Solar lights not working anymore?

3-4 years ago I bought these expensive solar lights. All worked and were very bright. Now after years of being used, some are not lighting. I read online the Rechargeable batteries needed replaced so I bought AA Ni-Mh. The kind my lights needed. Well I put them in the lights that don’t light and I got mixed results. Some of the lights now light again but the others are still dead. These lights are very well taken care of too. They are brought inside for the winter and they haven’t been dropped or anything. I have taken one that doesn’t light apart to see if any wires were disconnected, but they were all fine. I really don’t know what wrong with these lights and they are too expensive too just replace. Any thoughts or tips on how to fix this?
I have also charged the new batteries in a AA charger. When put in the lights though, nothing happens when it gets dark out. It’s not a lack of charge thats the problem.

The earth is in danger of catastrophic events. Our current wastefulness is killing our wildlife, atmosphere, and water. We are responsible for this current environmental crisis. God chose the human race to care for the earth, but we have neglected and abused this responsibility.
Although there are many problems facing the planet, we can narrow them down to three main ones. They are: water pollution, over hunting and over fishing a species to extinction, and global warming.
The first item on the list, water pollution, consists of oil spills, litter, and harmful chemicals. Oil spills occur when a ship has a leak and spills oil into the river, ocean, lake, etc. Litter is the dumping of garbage into rivers, lakes, oceans, etc. Lastly, chemicals are usually dumped into rivers by industrial factories located on or near a riverbed.
All three of the water pollution problems can be solved by people being more careful, but unfortunately many people don’t care about the earth or future generations.
Oil spills could mainly be prevented if ship captains were a little bit more aware of their surroundings and avoided big objects. Litter might be resolved if people were more educated on the issues and knew what kind of deadly consequences arise every time they throw a piece of litter on the ground. To solve the problem of chemicals being dumped, local governments need to strictly regulate and enforce laws against it.
The over hunting of fish is a problem, because fishermen need to continually fish to make money, but without regulation, entire fish populations could be wiped out in a matter of years. More countries need to protect fish by putting them on an endangered species lists, therefore making it illegal to catch endangered fish.
Of the three issues, global warming is the most controversial. Although most scientists agree that global warming is a legitimate threat, there are some scientists who believe it is entirely natural and will go away in a few years. The scientists who believe that it is a threat, point towards green house gases that are poured from cars and factories every day. They believe that the gasses clog the atmosphere and trap in sunlight, that in turn, heats the planet. To help the planet from this problem, people could buy more fuel efficient light bulbs, cars, and appliances. Worldwide, governments and energy companies should begin to convert their power sources to solar power and wind energy. Car companies should also begin to design electric cars that don’t pollute the air.
These are just a few steps people can make to save the planet; if we don’t, life on the planet could cease to exist.
