Where can get information on Plastic sheet like materials that act as PV cells to convert light to energy?

I want to install Solar PV cells to produce electircity for domestic use. I believe there is a new plastic material that converts light energy into electricity for domestice use This material can be used as sheet to cover the entire house roof to make use of the light that falls on the roof. Where can I get this type of light plastic PV material and what will will it cost

why solar panels are being installed on light poles?

I pass about 3 township every day for my commute. I have seen Solar panels are been installed on the street light poles in every town that I pass.
Some of the poles do not have any Light Bulbs on the top – but still the panels are installed.
I wonder why the panels are for – Of course the obvious reason to send the light energy from the sun to the grid.
